60% of the human body is made up of liquid

Around 60% of the human body is made up of liquid. The liquid that we have in the body is called body fluid. The body of a normal 70kg adult holds about 42 litres of body fluid. So you may even say that human beings are made of fluid.

Body loses 2.5 liters of body fluid per day.

Even on a quiet day, people lose about 2.5 litres of body fluid each day, while on an active day people can lose much more. It is important to replace the lost fluids to keep a balance between fluid intake and fluid loss.

What will happen if we lose our body fluid?

Humans cannot survive without body fluid. If the body loses just 3% (about 900ml in case of 60kg adult) of its fluid, dehydration symptoms such as fatigue will occur. With a 4-5% fluid loss, humans experience headache and dizziness. It can be fatal if more than 10% of body fluid is lost.

Roles of body fluid

Body fluid fills up the cells of your body and constantly flows throughout the body as blood and lymphatic fluid. It carries oxygen and nutrients to cells and excretes waste out of the body via mainly urine. Moreover, body fluid helps to maintain body temperature by sweating. Therefore, you could say body fluid has a very important role of regulating internal body conditions.

Thirst mechanism

We all feel thirsty. Why does this happen? It is a signal from the body telling you that your body fluid is not well-balanced. Desire to drink is generated from your brain in order to prevent problems induced by body fluid imbalance.

Two mechanisms that make you thirsty.

You become thirsty:

1. When you lose body fluid.
2. When there is an increase in your body fluid thickness.

The Body Fights Dehydration 24 Hours a Day

Body fluid is lost not only when perspiring, but also from the skin and breath even when sleeping. That means we are losing body fluid 24 hours a day, and always fighting dehydration.

• Воду должны пить те, кто подвержен запорам и потребляет недостаточно фруктов и овощей. Два-три стакана воды утром сразу после пробуждения действуют как самое эффективное слабительное.
